Summary

Occupational exposures during pregnancy encompass a broad array of physical, chemical and psychosocial factors that can influence maternal and foetal health. Physical demands such as prolonged standing, heavy lifting and exposure to whole‐body vibration have been linked to preterm birth, low birth weight and small-for-gestational-age infants. Shift work and long working hours may disrupt circadian rhythms and endocrine function, potentially increasing the risk of miscarriage and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Chemical exposures—ranging from solvents and heavy metals to particulate matter—can exert toxic effects on the developing foetus, while psychosocial stressors including high job strain or low control at work contribute to adverse outcomes through neuroendocrine and inflammatory pathways. The cumulative impact of these hazards is shaped by individual susceptibility, workplace policies and access to prenatal care. Globally, as female labour‐force participation rises, understanding and mitigating occupational risks has become critical for public health.
