Occupational Safety and Health in Agriculture
Summary
Agriculture remains one of the most hazardous industries worldwide owing to its complex interplay of manual labour, machinery operation, environmental exposures and animal handling. Workers face acute risks such as machinery entanglement, falls from heights, animal‐related trauma and heat stress, alongside chronic exposures to biological agents and agrochemicals. Demographic shifts, including an ageing workforce and the use of temporary or migrant labour, compound vulnerability. Economic pressures encourage the adoption of mechanisation and faster production cycles, which can introduce new hazards. Effective safety management requires integrated approaches encompassing hazard identification, risk assessment, engineering controls, training and regulatory oversight. Globally, the burden of both fatal and non-fatal injuries undermines rural livelihoods, strains health services and jeopardises food security. Advances in injury surveillance, engineering interventions and policy evaluation have fostered greater understanding of causal factors and intervention efficacy, yet implementation gaps persist, especially among smallholder and self-employed farmers. Emphasis on practical, low-cost solutions, participatory training and harmonised injury reporting is critical to reducing harm and ensuring the sustainability of agricultural communities.
