Summary
The Gulf of Mexico exhibits a complex circulation system driven by wind forcing, buoyancy fluxes and boundary interactions. At its core lies the Loop Current, a deep-reaching, warm western boundary current entering through the Yucatán Channel, circulating anticyclonically before exiting via the Florida Straits. Periodic shedding of Loop Current Eddies (LCEs) injects energetic, salt- and heat-laden water masses westwards, influencing regional stratification and mixing. Along the continental slope, bathymetric features enhance diapycnal mixing, ventilating deep basins and modulating the transformation between intermediate and abyssal water masses. Seasonal wind patterns drive shelf–slope exchanges that deliver nutrients and sediment plumes from river outflows into deeper waters, thus linking physical circulation to biogeochemical cycles. Submesoscale fronts and topographically steered flows further shape local variability, with implications for pollutant transport, hypoxia development and fisheries productivity.
