Online learning in higher education has evolved into a multifaceted ecosystem that extends beyond the simple transmission of lectures via digital platforms. Effectiveness in this context is gauged by a range of indicators including student engagement, academic performance, satisfaction and skill acquisition. Evidence shows that interactivity and social presence play a key role in fostering deeper learning, while self-regulated learning strategies underpin autonomy and motivation. The rapid shift to virtual modalities during global disruptions has accelerated innovation in instructional design, from adaptive learning environments to immersive simulations. Nonetheless, persistent challenges remain: digital inequality, variation in pedagogical quality and the need for robust support for both students and instructors. Effective online programmes balance technology quality, course design, instructor support and purposeful community building, thereby enabling institutions to scale access while maintaining educational rigour and learner well-being.

Recent hybrid literature reviews in business and management education have highlighted the fragmentation of online teaching approaches. Researchers identified six thematic clusters—spanning virtual space design, collaborative practices, instructor empowerment and institutional structures—that shape how learners co-construct value and engage in peer-to-peer interaction. This work underscores the importance of richly designed digital environments that foster meaningful social connections and avoid anomic learning.

Empirical studies on learner control in blended and fully online contexts reveal nuanced effects on engagement and outcomes. In one large-scale investigation across diverse study activities, students’ perceptions of autonomy varied by task, and higher perceived control did not uniformly translate to greater cognitive or behavioural engagement. Indeed, too much autonomy in reading and lecture attendance was linked to lower engagement in some cases, suggesting that instructional scaffolding must be calibrated to activity type and learner needs.

Research from a frontier economy has illuminated the drivers of e-learning satisfaction and academic performance among distance learners. Key factors include technology quality, ease of use, instructor support and course design. Satisfaction was found to mediate the relationship between these drivers and learning outcomes, indicating that even high-quality systems must be complemented by positive learner experiences. Practical recommendations include ongoing training for instructors and students, and the adoption of user-friendly platforms to bolster both satisfaction and performance.
