Oral Health Care for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities

Oral health care for individuals with intellectual disabilities presents unique challenges and opportunities. This population often exhibits higher rates of dental caries, periodontal disease and malocclusion owing to factors such as impaired manual dexterity, atypical craniofacial development and fluctuations in oral microbiota. Behavioural and communicative barriers may hinder routine oral hygiene and attendance at dental clinics, requiring tailored approaches to prevention and treatment. Effective care hinges on interdisciplinary collaboration between general dentists, special care dentists, caregivers and allied health professionals. Strategies such as caregiver education, environmental adaptations, desensitisation techniques and appropriate use of sedation contribute to enhanced cooperation and reduced anxiety. Policy initiatives, community outreach and domiciliary services can bridge access gaps, promote equity and improve quality of life on a global scale.

A study conducted in an institutional setting assessed clinical oral health status and treatment needs among adults with intellectual disability. The investigation revealed a high prevalence of untreated decay, periodontal signs and malocclusion, with dependent brushing behaviour correlating strongly with poorer oral hygiene scores. Male residents exhibited more extensive caries and gingival disease than females. Findings emphasise the necessity of specialised training for dental practitioners, enhanced oral health literacy for caregivers and regular in-house screening programmes. The work underscores the importance of embedding oral health education within institutional care plans to close the gap in preventive and restorative services for people with intellectual disability.
