Oral Health Disparities and Access to Dental Care

Oral health disparities refer to the uneven distribution of dental diseases and uneven access to preventive and therapeutic services across different population groups. These gaps are influenced by socioeconomic status, education, ethnicity, geographic location and systemic factors such as insurance coverage and health-care infrastructure. Untreated dental caries, advanced periodontal disease and tooth loss not only impair quality of life and nutritional status but also contribute to broader non-communicable disease burdens. Barriers to care include direct costs, lack of dental insurance, workforce maldistribution, low health literacy and social stigma. Effective strategies span policy reforms towards universal dental coverage, integration of oral health into primary care, community outreach and culturally tailored interventions. Globally, low- and middle-income regions bear the highest untreated disease burdens, underscoring the need for equitable resource allocation and workforce training. Practical applications include mobile clinics, school-based prevention programmes and tele-dentistry models aimed at bridging service gaps.
