Oral Health Disparities in Incarcerated Populations
Summary
Incarcerated individuals worldwide experience markedly poorer oral health compared to the general population. High rates of dental caries, tooth loss and periodontal disease converge with limited access to routine dental care, inadequate preventive measures and constrained health-promotion initiatives within custodial settings. Socioeconomic disadvantage and pre-existing neglect of oral health often precede imprisonment, and institutional barriers such as irregular dental staffing, restrictive clinic schedules and security protocols exacerbate unmet treatment needs. These disparities carry far-reaching consequences for general health, psychosocial well-being and successful reintegration, as untreated oral disease is linked to systemic infections, nutritional deficits and diminished self-esteem. Emerging research emphasises the importance of tailored interventions, enhanced oral health literacy and integrated models of care to mitigate these inequities and improve outcomes for a vulnerable and underserved population.
