Oral Health Management in Diabetic Populations

Diabetes mellitus and oral health are intimately linked through shared inflammatory pathways and common risk factors. Chronic hyperglycaemia exacerbates periodontal inflammation, leading to increased tissue breakdown, while severe periodontitis may impair glycaemic control. Effective management therefore demands an integrated approach encompassing regular periodontal screening, rigorous glycaemic monitoring and patient education on optimal oral hygiene. Mechanical therapies such as scaling and root planing remain the cornerstone of periodontal treatment, often supplemented by adjunctive antiseptics or systemic antimicrobials where indicated. Increasingly, digital tools and interprofessional collaboration between dental practitioners, primary care physicians and diabetes specialists are employed to ensure holistic care. Prevention strategies, including personalised oral health education and risk-based recall intervals, have been shown to reduce both oral and systemic complications. From a public health perspective, incorporating oral care into diabetes management protocols has demonstrated cost savings and reduced hospital admissions. Globally, guidelines now recommend that individuals with diabetes undergo at least biannual periodontal assessments, with intensified maintenance schedules for those exhibiting poor glycaemic control or advanced periodontal disease.
