Recent observational analyses have demonstrated that provision of preventive periodontal treatment in older adults with dementia is associated with a marked reduction in mortality risk over extended follow-up. In a large cohort study spanning more than a decade, patients who received regular periodontal therapy exhibited significantly higher cumulative survival rates than untreated counterparts, suggesting that control of periodontal inflammation may confer systemic benefits beyond the oral cavity. Another population-based investigation in an East Asian setting has explored the bidirectional links between tooth loss, denture use and dementia incidence. Findings indicate that edentulism and use of removable dentures are correlated with higher prevalence of cognitive impairment, while the presence of periodontitis appears inversely related to dementia diagnosis, underscoring the complex interplay between oral disease, prosthetic rehabilitation and neurodegenerative processes.
