Summary
The oral cavity represents a dynamic ecosystem whose microbial inhabitants and inflammatory milieu extend far beyond local tissues to influence systemic health. Chronic conditions such as periodontitis, dental caries and endodontic infections give rise to a persistent inflammatory burden, enabling oral pathogens and pro-inflammatory mediators to disseminate via the bloodstream and lymphatic system. This interplay contributes to the pathogenesis and progression of diverse systemic disorders, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, adverse pregnancy outcomes, respiratory infections and neurodegenerative conditions. Conversely, systemic diseases can exacerbate oral pathology by altering host immune responses and tissue repair mechanisms, exemplifying a bidirectional relationship. Effective disease management thus demands a holistic strategy in which rigorous oral hygiene, targeted periodontal therapy and interprofessional collaboration form integral components of chronic-disease prevention and treatment programmes. By mitigating oral inflammatory load and microbial translocation, clinicians can achieve more favourable systemic outcomes and reduce overall healthcare burden on a global scale.
