Orangutan conservation and habitat management address the urgent need to halt and reverse declines of the three Pongo species across Borneo and Sumatra. Integrated population analyses have combined field surveys and interview data to reveal that Bornean orangutan numbers declined by around 25 percent over a recent decade, with survival rates strongly linked to forest extent and rainfall regimes. These findings underscore the urgency of location-specific management interventions to counter habitat conversion and human–wildlife conflict. In parallel, large-scale camera-trap studies demonstrate that terrestrial locomotion is a natural component of Bornean orangutan behaviour, occurring as frequently in degraded and primary forests. This behavioural flexibility suggests that orangutans can utilise small forest patches and cross moderate openings, highlighting the conservation value of maintaining canopy gaps below critical thresholds and reinforcing the role of habitat mosaics in connectivity.
