Orthopedic Surgical Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease

Summary

Parkinson’s disease imposes unique challenges for joint replacement, owing to motor impairment, altered balance and rigidity. Patients undergoing total knee or hip arthroplasty often experience meaningful pain relief and improved mobility, yet functional gains may be attenuated by progression of neurological disability. Complication profiles diverge from non-Parkinsonian cohorts, with increased incidence of medical events such as blood-loss anaemia and urinary tract infection, alongside mechanical complications including periprosthetic dislocations and fractures. Implant survivorship remains comparable in early stages, but long-term outcomes may decline with advancing disease. Preoperative optimisation, multidisciplinary coordination and tailored implant selection have emerged as critical factors to enhance safety and function in this population. Globally, these findings underscore the need for individualised surgical pathways to address the growing demographic of older adults with Parkinson’s disease requiring arthroplasty.
