Osteoarthritis is a progressive, degenerative joint disease characterised by cartilage erosion, subchondral bone remodelling and synovial inflammation that leads to pain, lameness and reduced quality of life in dogs. It affects multiple joints, most commonly the elbow, hip, stifle and tarsus, and carries a substantial welfare and economic burden worldwide. Risk factors include breed predisposition, advanced age, excess body weight and prior joint injury, and early radiographic changes often precede overt clinical signs. Management adopts a multimodal strategy combining weight control, controlled exercise, physiotherapy and pharmacological analgesia, typically non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
