Endurance athletes face the dual challenge of optimising energy expenditure and navigating complex race environments to achieve peak performance. Pacing strategies—how an athlete distributes effort across a race—emerge from the interplay of physiological capacity, cognitive decision-making and external factors such as course profile and the presence of rivals. Research has revealed that optimal performance often entails dynamic adjustments: maintaining an even speed on flat terrain, conserving resources on ascents and permitting endspurt accelerations as physiological reserves allow. Cognitive processes, including metacognitive monitoring and attentional focus, regulate perceptions of effort and guide tactical decisions in real time. Meanwhile, interactions with competitors can act as social affordances that prompt athletes to alter their pace, sometimes at the expense of purely physiological optimisation. Advances in wearable sensors and split-time analyses have deepened insights into how pacing profiles vary by distance, sex and competitive context, informing training prescriptions, race tactics and event planning across disciplines from road running to cycling and swimming.
