Pain assessment encompasses a spectrum of approaches designed to quantify and characterise the sensory, emotional and functional impact of pain. Traditional self-report scales such as the Visual Analogue Scale and Numerical Rating Scale remain fundamental for gauging intensity, while multidimensional instruments—including the Brief Pain Inventory and McGill Pain Questionnaire—capture qualitative dimensions such as affective interference and sensory descriptors. Advances in quantitative sensory testing offer objective measures of threshold and tolerance through calibrated stimuli. Emerging digital tools, such as smartphone pain diaries and wearable sensors, enable real-time monitoring of fluctuations in pain experience and activity levels. Concurrently, neuroimaging and biomarker assays are expanding our understanding of central and peripheral correlates of pain, with the prospect of personalised prognostic algorithms.
