Summary
Loess‐paleosol sequences constitute one of the most continuous and widespread terrestrial archives of Quaternary climate change. Loess, a windblown silt deposit, alternates with palaeosols—soils formed during intervals of reduced dust accumulation and enhanced biological activity. Variations in grain size, mineralogy, geochemistry and organic carbon content through these layers are interpreted as proxies for past temperature, precipitation, vegetation cover and wind strength. By combining stratigraphic analysis with dating methods such as optically stimulated luminescence, researchers reconstruct the timing and magnitude of glacial–interglacial cycles, monsoon dynamics and regional environmental shifts. These reconstructions inform models of atmospheric circulation, ice‐sheet extent and the interplay between terrestrial and marine systems. Moreover, loess‐paleosol records from Eurasia, North America and other dust‐prone regions furnish critical benchmarks for testing climate model simulations and for understanding the sensitivity of land surfaces to natural and anthropogenic forcings.
