Summary
Paleoclimatic records of Asian monsoon variability derive from a range of natural archives—including speleothems, lacustrine and marine sediments, glacial ice cores and tree rings—that together span orbital to centennial timescales. These records reveal that monsoon intensity and spatial patterns respond primarily to Northern Hemisphere summer insolation modulated by ice‐volume changes during glacial cycles, with precessional forcing driving phase shifts in monsoon circulation. On millennial and sub‐millennial scales, abrupt events such as Heinrich stadials and the Younger Dryas manifest as synchronous shifts in monsoon strength across South and East Asia, linked via atmospheric teleconnections and variations in Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. On shorter timescales, modes of ocean–atmosphere variability in the Pacific and Indian Oceans—such as the Pacific Walker Circulation, Intertropical Convergence Zone migrations, ENSO and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation—imprint interannual to multidecadal fluctuations on monsoon precipitation. High‐resolution proxy records have elucidated spatial heterogeneity in rainfall responses across the monsoon domain, reflecting interactions between large‐scale circulations, land–sea thermal contrasts and topography. These insights are critical for benchmarking climate models and for understanding the potential trajectories of monsoon systems under anthropogenic warming, given their direct impact on water resources and agriculture for billions of people.

Recent studies have combined multiproxy speleothem records to reconstruct variations in monsoon rainfall seasonality and teleconnections. A two‐millennia reconstruction from southeastern Indonesia reveals antiphased shifts in Australasian monsoon and East Asian precipitation, pointing to centennial‐scale expansions and contractions of the Australasian ITCZ linked to Pacific Walker Circulation strength. High‐resolution stalagmite δ18O and lamina thickness from southern China over the past 200 years demonstrate that interannual to decadal ENSO and Pacific Decadal Oscillation phases modulate the ratio of summer to non‐summer monsoon rainfall, reflecting changes in seasonal moisture sources. Deep‐time records from central Chinese caves show that millennial‐scale monsoon minima coincide with Antarctic warming events, underscoring a hemispheric seesaw in atmospheric circulation on sub‐orbital timescales that likely amplifies deglacial CO2 feedbacks.
