Paleoecological Dynamics of East African Lake Systems

East African lakes, many occupying tectonic rift basins, serve as unparalleled archives of past environmental change. Sediment sequences deposited over millennia preserve biological, geochemical and mineralogical signals that document shifts in monsoon intensity, hydrological balance and ecosystem structure. Multiproxy studies of pollen, diatoms, lipid biomarkers and stable isotopes reveal phases of wetter and drier conditions throughout the Holocene, punctuated by episodes such as the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age. These records also capture the onset of agriculture and pastoralism, showing how catchment disturbance and land‐use change have modulated nutrient inputs, erosion rates and in‐lake productivity.
