Caregiver-assisted hygiene routines and early introduction to preventive programmes have been shown to mitigate disease progression. Emerging evidence implicates both microbial dysbiosis and host genetic variation in shaping the severity of periodontitis, underlining the need for tailored surveillance and interdisciplinary management strategies to preserve oral health and overall quality of life in this vulnerable population.

A comprehensive study of the oral microbiome in children with Down syndrome has revealed distinct patterns of bacterial diversity and composition linked to gingival inflammation. Analysis of plaque-derived DNA demonstrated significant differences in alpha and beta diversity metrics between Down syndrome and control groups, with disparities most pronounced in subjects exhibiting gingivitis. Several genera, including Corynebacterium, Abiotrophia and Lautropia, displayed altered relative abundances in the Down syndrome cohort. These findings suggest that early shifts in microbial ecology may drive the rapid onset of periodontal disease and highlight potential targets for microbiome-based interventions.
