Summary
Periodontal disease represents one of the most prevalent inflammatory disorders affecting the oral cavity of companion and production animals. It arises from dysbiosis within the oral microbiome, where shifts in bacterial populations—from symbiotic commensals to opportunistic pathogens—drive tissue inflammation, destruction of gingival connective tissue and resorption of alveolar bone. In dogs, horses and ruminants alike, genera such as Porphyromonas, Fusobacterium, Tannerella and Treponema predominate in diseased sites, whereas healthy oral niches are often characterised by more diverse communities including Actinomyces, Neisseria and Streptococcus. Molecular approaches, notably 16S rRNA gene profiling and shotgun metagenomics, have revealed that traditional culture methods underestimate species richness and obscure antimicrobial-resistance genes. The global significance of veterinary periodontal research extends beyond animal welfare, informing One Health initiatives by identifying potential zoonotic reservoirs and guiding stewardship of antimicrobial compounds. Applications range from targeted diagnostics and risk-factor management to the development of adjunctive therapies such as probiotics, natural antimicrobials and small-molecule inhibitors to restore symbiosis and mitigate bone loss.

Recent studies have elucidated how specific fimbrial protein genotypes of Porphyromonas gulae correlate with periodontal disease progression in small-breed dogs. By stratifying over six hundred animals according to age and breed, researchers demonstrated that the prevalence and combination of FimA genotypes A, B and C increase in parallel with disease severity. Breed-specific associations were observed—for example, in Toy Poodles and Chihuahuas but not Dachshunds—suggesting that genotypic screening may offer prognostic value and enable more precise intervention strategies.
