By blocking the serotonin transporter on platelets, these drugs reduce intraplatelet serotonin levels and attenuate platelet aggregation responses. Clinically, this mechanism manifests as an elevated tendency to bleed, with implications for surgical risk, gastrointestinal haemorrhage and interactions with anticoagulant or antiplatelet regimens. The pharmacological modulation of platelet function by SSRIs encompasses altered intracellular calcium signalling, reduced granule secretion and diminished expression of adhesion molecules. These changes may translate to both reduced arterial thrombosis risk and increased bleeding complications, demanding careful consideration when co‐prescribing SSRIs with other haemostatic agents.
