Pharmacological Properties of Ammi Visnaga and Its Bioactive Compounds

Summary

Ammi visnaga, commonly known as khella, is a Mediterranean herb long valued for its diverse pharmacological activities. Its principal bioactive constituents include γ-pyrones (notably khellin and visnagin), furanocoumarins such as xanthotoxin, flavonoids and volatile oils. These compounds elicit smooth-muscle relaxation in ureter and coronary arteries, underpinning traditional uses for renal colic and angina. A growing body of work has characterised its antioxidant profile, linking high phenolic content to free-radical scavenging and cytoprotective effects in liver and kidney models. Antimicrobial and antineoplastic activities have also been reported: certain extracts modulate bacterial efflux pumps to counter resistance, while furanocoumarin derivatives provoke apoptosis in cancer cell lines. The essential oil fraction, rich in monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, exhibits both in vitro and in vivo antioxidant potency, ameliorating drug-induced oxidative damage. Collectively, these findings reinforce Ammi visnaga’s promise as a source of natural lead compounds for coronary, renal, infectious and oncological indications, and highlight its potential in modern drug development.

Pharmacological Properties of Ammi Visnaga and Its Bioactive Compounds publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in pharmacological properties of ammi visnaga and its bioactive compounds across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Coumarins: Benzopyrone compounds found in many plants, some of which exhibit vasodilatory and spasmolytic properties.

Furanocoumarins: A subgroup of coumarins containing a fused furan ring, notable for photoreactivity and cytotoxic effects.

IC₅₀ (Half-maximal Inhibitory Concentration): The concentration of a substance required to inhibit a specified biological process by 50%.

Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS): Chemically reactive molecules containing oxygen, whose accumulation can cause cellular damage.

Efflux Pump: A transmembrane protein complex in bacteria that expels antimicrobial agents, contributing to drug resistance.
