Summary
Arctium lappa, commonly known as burdock, is a perennial plant with a rich history in traditional medicine across Asia and Europe. The root, leaves and seeds are abundant in bioactive metabolites, including polyphenols, flavonoids, lignans such as arctiin and its aglycone arctigenin, and polysaccharides. These compounds confer a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities.
Antioxidant effects arise from high levels of caffeoylquinic acids and flavonoids which scavenge free radicals, reducing oxidative stress in hepatic and cardiovascular tissues. Anti-inflammatory actions are mediated through suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and inhibition of lipoxygenase and nuclear factor-κB pathways, offering potential in the treatment of allergic and inflammatory skin disorders. Hepatoprotective properties address toxin-induced liver damage by modulating detoxification enzymes and restoring antioxidant defences.
