Summary
Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, commonly known as night jasmine, has a rich ethnopharmacological heritage across South and Southeast Asia. Modern phytochemical analyses have revealed a complex array of bioactive constituents, including iridoid glycosides, flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins and essential oils. These compounds collectively underpin a spectrum of pharmacological effects: robust anti-inflammatory activity through cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase inhibition; potent antioxidant and free-radical-scavenging properties; antiproliferative actions against tumour cell lines; antimicrobial and antifungal efficacy; and hypoglycaemic effects mediated by enhanced insulin secretion and glucose uptake. Preclinical studies also indicate hepatoprotective, analgesic and antimalarial potentials. Mechanistic insights from in silico modelling and in vitro assays have begun to elucidate molecular interactions with enzymes such as COX-2, phosphodiesterases and various cytokines. The global significance of N. arbor-tristis lies in its promise as a source of novel lead compounds for chronic inflammation, metabolic disorders and infectious diseases. Translation to clinical applications will require standardised extraction, rigorous toxicology and human trials to validate dosage, safety and efficacy.
