Summary

Freshwater leeches (Clitellata: Hirudinea) represent a morphologically and ecologically diverse assemblage distributed across lentic and lotic habitats worldwide. These annelids occupy roles as ectoparasites, predators and mutualists, and their evolutionary history has been reshaped by multiple colonizations of freshwater environments. Advances in molecular sequencing, particularly of mitochondrial markers and multi‐locus nuclear data, have enabled robust reconstructions of leech phylogeny, revealing deep splits among major families such as Glossiphoniidae and Piscicolidae and clarifying the relationships of medicinal leeches (Hirudinidae) to other clades. Molecular‐clock approaches have dated key diversifications to the Mesozoic and Cenozoic, often linked to geological events and host‐associated radiations. Integrative taxonomy, combining morphometrics with DNA barcoding (notably cytochrome c oxidase subunit I), has uncovered cryptic diversity in ancient lakes, tundra water bodies and tropical wetlands, prompting the description of numerous new species. Patterns of endemism in closed basins contrast with wide‐ranging lineages adapted to mobile hosts such as fish and turtles. Understanding these evolutionary patterns carries practical implications for bioindicator development, conservation of imperilled leech‐host systems and the management of leech‐borne pathogens.

One recent study has documented a remarkably diverse assemblage of glossiphoniid leeches residing within the mantle cavities of freshwater mussels. By integrating morphological diagnosis with multilocus phylogenetic analyses, this work demonstrated independent origins of mussel association in at least three leech lineages and described new species-level diversity that has been largely overlooked. A second investigation reported the first piscicolid leech inhabiting the mantle cavity of an Asian unionid mussel. Morphological and genetic evidence revealed a novel genus and species, and a fossil‐calibrated phylogeny suggested multiple independent freshwater invasions by a primarily marine family dating back to the Early Cretaceous. Together, these contributions have expanded the known ecological breadth of freshwater leeches and refined our understanding of host‐associated radiations.
