Phylogenetic Analysis and Taxonomic Revision of Verbenaceae
Summary
Verbenaceae, a cosmopolitan family of flowering plants encompassing trees, shrubs and herbs, has long presented taxonomic challenges owing to extensive morphological diversity and widespread convergence. Recent approaches integrate DNA sequence data from nuclear and plastid genomes with detailed morphological and morphometric analyses to reconstruct robust evolutionary trees and reassess genus and species boundaries. Phylogenetic analyses based on markers such as ITS and matK have clarified the monophyly of several traditional genera, revealed cryptic lineages and prompted the reclassification of polyphyletic assemblages. Taxonomic revisions now combine molecular evidence with field and herbarium studies to delimit genera on evolutionary grounds, establish natural groupings at infrageneric levels and describe novel taxa. These efforts carry practical significance for biodiversity conservation, sustainable use of medicinal and aromatic species, and informed management of invasive taxa. Overall, an integrative framework is forging a modern, globally coherent classification of Verbenaceae.

Phylogenetic Analysis and Taxonomic Revision of Verbenaceae publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in phylogenetic analysis and taxonomic revision of verbenaceae across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Phylogenetic analysis: Reconstruction of evolutionary relationships among organisms using molecular or morphological data to produce a branching diagram (phylogeny).
Taxonomic revision: Critical re‐evaluation of the classification, nomenclature and delimitation of taxa based on new evidence and analytical methods.
Molecular marker: A specific DNA sequence (e.g. ITS, matK) used to infer genetic relationships and evolutionary history.
Morphometric analysis: Statistical study of shape and size variation in biological structures to distinguish taxa.
Monophyly: A group of organisms that includes an ancestor and all of its descendants, forming a natural evolutionary unit.
