The Acanthaceae, a diverse family of predominantly tropical flowering plants, has long been subdivided on the basis of morphological characters into tribes and subtribes. These studies have refined divergence-time estimates, dating many diversifications to the Miocene expansion of tropical biomes, and have clarified the biogeographical history of lineages across Africa, Asia and the Americas. Integrative classification frameworks now combine molecular phylogenies with morphological, ecological and biogeographic data to produce a more natural taxonomy. Such a framework underpins our understanding of key evolutionary innovations—pollination syndromes, seed dispersal mechanisms and secondary metabolites—and guides conservation efforts for endemic and threatened taxa, while also informing the sustainable use of medicinal and ornamental species worldwide.
