Summary
Eastern Asia hosts one of the richest assemblages of anurans globally, with major contributions from families such as Rhacophoridae, Ranidae and Dicroglossidae. Molecular phylogenies have revealed deep divergences among lineages that correspond to geological events, climatic oscillations and island-mainland contrasts. In particular, montane refugia across the Hengduan Mountains, Taiwan and the Japanese archipelago harbour species with long independent histories, while lowland regions support rapid radiations, often linked to riverine barriers. Integrative taxonomy, combining multilocus DNA sequencing, bioacoustics and detailed morphology, has uncovered numerous cryptic species and refined the delimitation of genera such as Kurixalus, Zhangixalus and Theloderma. Such advances have reshaped our understanding of speciation modes—from vicariance and allopatric fragmentation to jump dispersal via land bridges—and of reproductive-mode evolution, including terrestrial deposition and oophagy. This phylogenetic framework is essential for conservation priority setting, informing assessments of extinction risk under habitat loss and emerging disease threats, and guiding captive-breeding and reintroduction programmes across a region of critical biodiversity value.

Recent studies have employed a comprehensive species-level phylogeny of tree frogs to disentangle the drivers of diversification across mainland Asia and associated islands. These analyses demonstrate near-constant overall diversification rates but reveal a highly uneven distribution of species richness, with montane islands and certain continental refugia exhibiting exceptionally high phylogenetic diversity. Climate has acted both as a barrier and as an ecological filter, promoting niche evolution in lineages that acquired key reproductive innovations—such as terrestrial egg deposition—while other clades persisted through niche conservatism and episodic dispersal during favourable climatic windows. This work highlights the interplay between evolutionary innovation, climatic heterogeneity and geographic isolation in shaping the unique anuran diversity of Eastern Asia.
