Summary

The royal ferns (family Osmundaceae) represent one of the most ancient and enduring lineages of leptosporangiate ferns, with fossil evidence extending back to the late Palaeozoic. Despite their modest modern diversity—fewer than twenty species divided among six genera—the group possesses a remarkably rich fossil record, including anatomically preserved trunks, rhizomes and fronds spanning more than 300 million years. Phylogenetic studies combining molecular data from chloroplast and nuclear markers with morphological character matrices have resolved major lineages within Osmundaceae, clarifying relationships among the subfamilies Osmundoideae and Todeoideae and recognising genera such as Osmunda, Osmundastrum and Plenasium. Debates over the monophyly of Osmunda have been informed by integrative analyses that reconcile morphological, anatomical and molecular evidence, leading to revised hypotheses of root placement and divergence timing. Biogeographical reconstructions place the origin of modern royal fern clades in Gondwanan swamps, with subsequent dispersal to Laurasian temperate regions. This evolutionary history underpins current efforts to use royal ferns as model systems for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, conservation of relict communities and studies of developmental evolution in vascular plants.
