Summary

Phylogeography of amphibian lineages examines how historical processes—such as climate oscillations, tectonic events and habitat fragmentation—have shaped the geographic distribution of genetic diversity within and among species. Amphibians, with their typically limited dispersal abilities and sensitivity to environmental change, provide key insights into past biogeographic events. Multilocus and phylogenomic data sets, often drawing on both mitochondrial and nuclear markers, are combined with species distribution models and coalescent‐based demographic reconstructions to infer glacial refugia, post‐glacial colonisation routes and ancient vicariance. Studies have revealed complex patterns of cryptic diversity in tree frogs, salamanders and newts across Europe, Asia and Africa, uncovering Miocene divergences linked to plate movements as well as Pleistocene fragmentation driven by glacial cycles. Hybrid zones between divergent lineages serve both as natural laboratories for speciation and as benchmarks for delimiting conservation units. Integrating genetic lineages with ecological niche projections refines predictions of range shifts under future climate scenarios. Ultimately, amphibian phylogeography underpins conservation planning by identifying centres of endemism, guiding reserve design, informing biosecurity against invasive taxa and elucidating evolutionary responses to environmental change.

Recent studies have resolved long‐standing taxonomic uncertainties in West Asian tree frogs by analysing both mitochondrial (16S, COI) and nuclear markers across hundreds of individuals. Time‐calibrated phylogenies date major splits to the Miocene and identify genetic breaks consistent with historical barriers, while spatial analyses pinpoint zones limiting gene flow and reveal potential evolutionarily significant units warranting targeted conservation. Complementary work in Western Europe has demonstrated that the genomic signature of hybrid zones is strongly influenced by the age and location of secondary contacts, with refugial zones exhibiting narrow, well‐defined transitions and post‐glacial or human‐mediated contacts displaying extensive admixture. This framework emphasises the importance of phylogeographic history in interpreting reproductive isolation and refining species boundaries within incipient radiations.
