Phytochemical Pharmacology of Toona Sinensis Extracts
Summary
Toona sinensis, a member of the Meliaceae family, has long been valued in East Asian traditional medicine and cuisine. Phytochemical investigations have revealed an extensive array of secondary metabolites, notably triterpenoids (including limonoids and apotirucallane-type derivatives), flavonoids, phenylpropanoids and sterols. These compounds underpin a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities. Extracts of leaves, buds, bark and pericarp exhibit potent antioxidant capacity through scavenging reactive oxygen species and upregulating endogenous enzymes such as superoxide dismutase. Anti-inflammatory effects arise from inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators via suppression of the NF-κB and MAPK signalling cascades. Anticancer properties have been demonstrated by induction of apoptosis via mitochondrial pathways, cell-cycle arrest and inhibition of metastatic enzymes. Antidiabetic and nephroprotective actions involve modulation of glucose metabolism and attenuation of high-glucose-induced oxidative stress in renal mesangial cells. Additional activities include antiviral inhibition of viral attachment, hepatoprotection, antibacterial efficacy and immunomodulation. These multifaceted effects position T. sinensis extracts as promising leads for nutraceuticals and drug discovery across cardiovascular, metabolic, inflammatory and oncological indications.

The graph below shows the total number of articles in phytochemical pharmacology of toona sinensis extracts across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Triterpenoids: A class of terpenes composed of six isoprene units, often bioactive and structurally diverse.
Limonoids: Oxygenated triterpenoids characterised by a furanolactone core, frequently exhibiting anticancer and insecticidal properties.
Phenylpropanoids: Secondary metabolites derived from phenylalanine, including coumarins and lignans, with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions.
Flavonoids: Polyphenolic compounds featuring a 15-carbon skeleton, widely recognised for free-radical scavenging and vascular benefits.
Apotirucallane-type triterpenoids: A subclass of triterpenoids based on the apotirucallane skeleton, notable for antioxidant and cytoprotective activities.
Oxidative stress: A pathological state arising from an imbalance between reactive oxygen species production and antioxidant defence mechanisms.
