Phytochemical Properties and Bioactivity of Agastache Species

Summary

Members of the genus Agastache are aromatic perennial herbs valued for their rich repertoire of secondary metabolites, notably phenylpropanoids and terpenoids. Volatile constituents such as estragole, methyleugenol and pulegone dominate essential oils across many species, whereas non-volatile fractions yield phenolic acids (for example rosmarinic acid) and flavonoids (including acacetin and tilianin). These phytochemicals underpin a breadth of biological effects. Antioxidant mechanisms arise from radical-scavenging phenolics, while vasorelaxant and antihypertensive actions involve nitric oxide modulation and calcium channel interactions. Enzyme-inhibitory properties extend to xanthine oxidase blockers, relevant to gout management, and anti-inflammatory activities mediated by suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Antimicrobial and antifungal effects further illustrate the genus’s potential as a reservoir of natural therapeutics. Recent advances emphasise formulation strategies to improve solubility and bioavailability of key glycosides, enhancing their translational value in cardiovascular, metabolic and dermatological applications.

Phytochemical Properties and Bioactivity of Agastache Species publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in phytochemical properties and bioactivity of agastache species across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Phenylpropanoids: A class of plant metabolites derived from phenylalanine, contributing to aroma and antioxidant activity.

Terpenoids: Diverse organic compounds built from isoprene units, often present in essential oils with antimicrobial properties.

Flavonoids: Polyphenolic compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, exemplified by acacetin and tilianin.

Xanthine oxidase: An enzyme involved in purine degradation; its inhibition reduces uric acid formation.

LC-MS fingerprinting: Analytical technique combining liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry to identify and quantify phytochemicals.

DPPH and ABTS assays: Spectrophotometric methods to assess antioxidant capacity by measuring radical scavenging activity.
