Phytochemical Properties and Biological Activities of Ajuga Species

Summary

The genus Ajuga comprises over 40 species of herbaceous plants in the Lamiaceae family, valued for their rich repertoire of bioactive phytochemicals. Key constituents include phytoecdysteroids, iridoid glycosides, neo-clerodane diterpenoids, flavonoids, phenolics and phenylethanoid glycosides. These compounds have been implicated in a broad spectrum of biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, antitumour, neuroprotective, antidiabetic, antimicrobial and wound-healing effects. Phytoecdysteroids act as natural adaptogens, while iridoid glycosides contribute anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory actions. Neo-clerodane diterpenoids and phenylethanoid glycosides offer additional therapeutic prospects, especially in dermatological and cosmetic contexts. Advances in analytical techniques—such as high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry—have elucidated the chemical diversity of this genus and enabled standardisation of extracts. Sustainable production methods, including cell culture biotechnologies, are now being explored to alleviate pressure on wild populations. Overall, Ajuga species represent a globally significant reservoir of multifaceted phytochemicals with promising applications in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals.

Research from Nature Portfolio

Research on Ajuga integrifolia leaf extracts has employed gas chromatography–mass spectrometry to profile solvent-dependent phytochemical composition and to assess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities. Methanol extracts exhibited the highest phenolic and flavonoid contents, correlating with superior free-radical scavenging and total antioxidant capacity. This extract also demonstrated the strongest anti-denaturation effect and the most potent inhibition of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and β-lactam-resistant Escherichia coli. Infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of phenolic, amine and hydroxyl functional groups. The study underscores the value of solvent selection for maximising bioactive yields and supports further exploration of A. integrifolia as a source of multifunctional therapeutic agents.

Phytochemical Properties and Biological Activities of Ajuga Species publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in phytochemical properties and biological activities of ajuga species across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Phytoecdysteroids: Steroidal compounds analogous to insect moulting hormones, exhibiting anabolic and adaptogenic effects in mammals.

Iridoid glycosides: Monoterpenoid derivatives bound to sugar moieties, known for anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Neo-clerodane diterpenoids: Diterpenoid metabolites with a clerodane backbone, often associated with antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities.

Phenylethanoid glycosides: Conjugates of phenolic acids and sugars, commonly contributing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
