Phytochemical Properties and Biological Activities of Pistacia Species

Summary

Pistacia species, belonging to the Anacardiaceae family, are recognised for their diverse phytochemical repertoire and associated bioactivities. Key chemical constituents include polyphenols such as flavonoids and tannins; volatile terpenoids exemplified by monoterpenes (α-pinene, myrcene); triterpenic acids predominantly in resinous exudates; and essential oils obtained from leaves, fruits and resins. These compounds underpin a spectrum of biological activities: potent antioxidant capacity via free-radical scavenging and upregulation of endogenous defence genes; broad-spectrum antimicrobial effects against bacteria and fungi; anti-inflammatory actions through inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines and enzymatic cascades; metabolic modulation in antidiabetic contexts; and cytotoxic or chemopreventive properties against various cancer cell lines. Traditional uses across the Mediterranean and Central Asia—as food preservatives, topical treatments for inflammatory conditions, and nutraceutical supplements—have been substantiated by modern analytical and pharmacological studies. Advances in extraction and formulation, including green hydrodistillation and selective isolation of bioactive fractions, have facilitated deeper insight into species- and organ-specific phytochemical profiles and enabled exploration of novel therapeutic and industrial applications.

Phytochemical Properties and Biological Activities of Pistacia Species publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in phytochemical properties and biological activities of pistacia species across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Polyphenols: A class of plant secondary metabolites characterised by multiple phenolic rings, responsible for antioxidant and enzyme-modulating activities.

Flavonoids: Subgroup of polyphenols with a characteristic C6–C3–C6 structure, known for free-radical scavenging and anti-inflammatory effects.

Terpenoids: Diverse family of plant-derived isoprene-based molecules, including monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, contributing to fragrance, antimicrobial and anticancer properties.

Triterpenic acids: Pentacyclic compounds derived from squalene cyclisation, noted for anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic potential.

Essential oil: Volatile, hydrophobic mixture of aromatic compounds extracted from plant tissues, often rich in monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes with antimicrobial and antioxidant functions.
