Phytochemical Properties and Biological Activities of Plantago Species
Summary
The genus Plantago encompasses more than 200 species of herbaceous plants distributed across temperate regions worldwide. Phytochemical investigations have revealed a rich repertoire of bioactive constituents, including iridoid glycosides (such as aucubin and catalpol), phenylethanoid glycosides (notably acteoside and plantamajoside), diverse polyphenols, flavonoids and water-soluble polysaccharides. These compounds underpin a wide spectrum of biological activities. Antioxidant and free-radical scavenging properties are mediated by phenolic hydroxyl groups, while iridoids and phenylethanoid glycosides contribute anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. Polysaccharide fractions from seed mucilage display gastroprotective and lipid-modulating actions. Extracts of various Plantago species have also demonstrated antimicrobial efficacy against bacterial pathogens and inhibitory effects on biofilm formation. Together, these findings support the use of Plantago as a source of nutraceuticals, topical wound-healing agents and adjunctive therapies for metabolic and inflammatory disorders, highlighting its global significance in herbal medicine and potential for pharmaceutical development.

Phytochemical Properties and Biological Activities of Plantago Species publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in phytochemical properties and biological activities of plantago species across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Iridoid glycosides: A class of monoterpenoid compounds with a cyclopentanoid pyran structure, often exhibiting anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects.
Phenylethanoid glycosides: Polyphenolic conjugates of hydroxytyrosol and caffeic acid, known for strong antioxidant and neuroprotective activities.
Biofilm: A structured community of microbial cells embedded in a self-produced polymeric matrix, associated with increased resistance to antibiotics.
Antioxidant capacity: The ability of a compound or extract to neutralise reactive oxygen species and prevent oxidative damage to biomolecules.
Polysaccharide mucilage: Water-soluble carbohydrate polymers in seed coats that confer viscous, gel-forming properties with gastroprotective and lipid-modulating functions.
