Phytochemical Properties and Health Benefits of Morinda Citrifolia
Summary
Morinda citrifolia, commonly known as noni, is a tropical shrub with a storied legacy in traditional medicine. Modern phytochemical analyses have revealed a rich spectrum of bioactive constituents, including flavonoids such as kaempferol and rutin, iridoids like asperuloside and deacetylasperulosidic acid, polysaccharides including nonioside A, coumarins such as scopoletin and anthraquinones like nordamnacanthal. These compounds exhibit potent antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory activities, evidenced by free‐radical scavenging assays and the upregulation of endogenous defence enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase). In vitro and in vivo models demonstrate modulation of key signal transduction pathways (Nrf2/Keap1, NF‐κB), metabolic regulators (AMPK, PPAR‐γ) and the gut microbiota. Collectively, such properties underpin a broad array of health benefits, from immunomodulation and metabolic regulation to hepatoprotection, cardiovascular support and emerging anticancer potential, highlighting noni’s promise as a functional nutraceutical.
