Phytochemical Properties and Health Effects of Adansonia Digitata
Summary
Adansonia digitata, commonly known as baobab, yields a fruit pulp and leaf material rich in diverse phytochemicals and micronutrients. The pulp is especially noted for its exceptionally high vitamin C content—often five to ten times that of oranges—alongside appreciable levels of calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron. Secondary metabolites include a complex array of phenolic compounds such as flavonoids, proanthocyanidins and tannins, together with carotenoids and organic acids. Detailed chemical profiling has identified tiliroside and various flavonol glycosides as dominant constituents, with regional variation in concentration. In vitro and in vivo studies attribute potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and analgesic activities to these compounds, while enzyme-inhibition assays reveal significant α-glucosidase and α-amylase suppression, underpinning antidiabetic potential. Traditional uses across Africa and beyond encompass treatment of fever, diarrhoea, parasitic infections and dehydration. Emerging clinical and animal trials suggest beneficial effects on glycaemic control, lipid metabolism and gastrointestinal health. However, standardisation of extract preparation, elucidation of precise mechanisms of action and well-controlled human trials remain priorities to translate ethnobotanical promise into validated therapeutic applications.

Phytochemical Properties and Health Effects of Adansonia Digitata publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in phytochemical properties and health effects of adansonia digitata across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Phenolic compounds: Secondary plant metabolites containing one or more hydroxylated aromatic rings, known for antioxidant properties.
Flavonoids: A subclass of phenolics characterised by a 15-carbon skeleton; contribute to anti-inflammatory and enzyme-inhibitory activities.
Proanthocyanidins: Oligomeric flavonoid units also called condensed tannins; potent free-radical scavengers.
α-Glucosidase: An intestinal enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates into glucose; inhibition slows postprandial blood sugar rise.
Antioxidant activity: The ability of a compound to neutralise reactive oxygen species and prevent oxidative damage.
