Phytochemical Properties and Pharmacological Applications of Boerhaavia Diffusa

Boerhaavia diffusa is a perennial herb widely used in traditional systems of medicine across Asia and Africa. Phytochemical investigations have revealed a rich repertoire of bioactive constituents, including phenolic glycosides, rotenoids, flavonoids, isoflavonoids, alkaloids, steroids and lignans. Representative compounds such as punarnavoside, boeravinones A–J, quercetin, kaempferol, punarnavine and β-ecdysone underpin a spectrum of pharmacological actions. These range from antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects to antimicrobial, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, renoprotective and anticancer activities. Mechanistic studies indicate modulation of oxidative stress pathways, inhibition of key metabolic enzymes, regulation of NF-κB and MAPK signalling, and protection of mitochondrial integrity. Advances in high-resolution metabolomic profiling and network pharmacology have elucidated multi-target interactions, while in vitro and in vivo models continue to validate therapeutic potential against metabolic dysfunction, organ-specific injuries and neoplastic disorders. The global significance of Boerhaavia diffusa lies in its potential for nutraceutical development, lead-compound discovery and the standardisation of herbal formulations to address chronic diseases and drug-induced toxicities.
