Phytochemical Properties and Therapeutic Applications of Aegle Marmelos

Summary

Aegle marmelos, commonly known as bael, is a member of the Rutaceae family widely cultivated across tropical and subtropical regions. Phytochemical investigations have revealed a rich repertoire of bioactive constituents including coumarins (marmelosin, aegeline), alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic acids and essential oils dominated by monoterpenes such as limonene. These compounds account for a broad spectrum of therapeutic activities. Traditional uses span antidiarrhoeal, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory applications, while modern studies have documented antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, radioprotective and wound-healing effects. Advances in chromatography, mass spectrometry and in vitro bioassays have elucidated mode-of-action pathways, including enzyme inhibition and modulation of oxidative stress. The global significance of A. marmelos lies in its potential as a source of novel pharmacophores for nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical development.

Research from Nature Portfolio

Recent work has demonstrated the anticancer and organ-protective potential of A. marmelos fruit extract in an animal model of chemically induced breast cancer. Administration of an ethanolic pulp extract (200 mg/kg body weight per day) for five weeks resulted in a marked reduction in tumour volume and suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α. Concurrent decreases in lipid peroxidation marker malondialdehyde and improvements in serum glucose and renal-hepatic biomarkers indicated a combined antiproliferative and hepato-renal protective effect. The study provides concrete evidence of multi-targeted efficacy, supporting further exploration of A. marmelos phytoconstituents as safe anticancer agents.
