Phytochemical Properties and Therapeutic Applications of Commiphora Species
Summary
Commiphora species exude a resinous oleo-gum containing a complex mixture of phytochemicals, notably monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, diterpenoids, triterpenoids, steroids and phenolic compounds. These constituents confer a spectrum of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, antiviral and analgesic effects. Mechanistic studies have shown that Commiphora extracts modulate inflammatory mediators, scavenge reactive oxygen species, induce programmed cell death in tumour cells, inhibit microbial growth and regulate metabolic pathways such as uncoupling protein 1 and adiponectin signalling. Traditional applications span wound healing, gastrointestinal relief, respiratory support and pain management. Advances in extraction techniques—such as supercritical CO₂—alongside chromatographic profiling have enabled the isolation and characterisation of bioactive furano-sesquiterpenoids, underpinning renewed interest in these resins as sources of multi-targeted therapeutic leads and as models for novel drug discovery.

Phytochemical Properties and Therapeutic Applications of Commiphora Species publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in phytochemical properties and therapeutic applications of commiphora species across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Sesquiterpenoid: A terpenoid compound composed of three isoprene units, often exhibiting bioactive properties in plant resins.
Furanodiene: A furano-sesquiterpenoid characterised by a furan ring fused to a sesquiterpene backbone, implicated in cytotoxic and antiviral effects.
Supercritical CO₂ extraction: A solvent-free extraction method using carbon dioxide above its critical temperature and pressure to isolate thermolabile phytochemicals.
Macrophage polarisation: The differentiation of macrophages into pro-inflammatory (M1) or anti-inflammatory/tissue-repairing (M2) phenotypes in response to microenvironmental cues.
