Summary

Arid ecosystems, characterised by low and highly variable precipitation, extreme temperatures and limited soil development, cover vast regions across the globe. Vegetation in these areas exhibits specialised adaptations—from annual therophytes that exploit brief moisture pulses to drought-resistant phanerophytes and chamaephytes that persist under chronic water stress. Species richness tends to be concentrated in microrefugia such as mountain wadis, sabkha margins and drainage lines, where topography and substrate heterogeneity moderate climatic extremes. Vegetation analysis combines field surveys of floristic composition with multivariate ordination techniques and remote sensing indices (for example NDVI) to quantify diversity patterns, detect community shifts and inform conservation and restoration efforts. Recent advances have emphasised the role of life-form spectra, chorological affinities and soil-moisture gradients in structuring plant assemblages, while also documenting the impact of overgrazing, land-use change and invasive species. Understanding these dynamics is essential for safeguarding genetic resources, guiding ecological restoration and mitigating desertification under rapid climate change.

Recent work in a mountainous valley has demonstrated that slope aspect and elevation jointly influence species composition, with cooler, north-facing slopes supporting greater species richness and a distinct assemblage of life forms. Analysis of nearly 190 vascular plants across elevation bands revealed a predominance of annual therophytes and small woody chamaephytes, alongside a strong representation of Saharo-Sindian and Sudano-Zambezian chorotypes. Multivariate ordination highlighted elevation as the primary driver of community structure, modulating microclimate and soil moisture to shape species distribution in an arid mountain catchment.
