Political landscapes across Latin America have undergone profound transformation over recent decades, characterised by the gradual erosion of once-dominant partisan loyalties and the emergence of highly fluid, fragmented party systems. Traditional cleavages rooted in class, urban–rural divides and the legacy of authoritarian rule have weakened, giving way to personalised leadership styles, outsider movements and the resurgence of populist narratives. Electoral volatility has increased as voters shift allegiances in response to economic crises, corruption scandals and social mobilisation around identity and rights. Institutional reforms—such as changes to electoral thresholds, primary systems and campaign financing—have reshaped competitive dynamics, while new digital platforms and social media have accelerated the diffusion of political messages. Regional variations persist, with some countries exhibiting renewed consolidation around centre-right or centre-left coalitions, and others displaying volatile swings towards radical alternatives. These dynamics carry global significance, offering insights into democratic resilience, the challenges of governance in heterogeneous societies and the prospects for policy continuity amid rapid partisan realignment.
