Populism and Democratic Dynamics in Southeast Asian Politics

Populism in Southeast Asia has emerged as a potent force reshaping democratic institutions, electoral campaigns and state–society relations. Characterised by anti-elite rhetoric, personalised leadership and appeals to the “will of the people”, populist movements in the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia intersect with longstanding legacies of authoritarianism, patronage and developmental nationalism. Rather than representing a singular ideology, these movements mobilise flexible discourses to exploit social cleavages, from urban–rural divides to religious and ethnic identities. Populist leaders deploy performative strategies—public spectacles, direct communication via social media and securitising language—to cultivate trust among core constituencies and delegitimise institutional checks. In parallel, civil society actors and regional organisations have contested populist encroachments through transnational advocacy networks and legal challenges, illustrating the contested and multispatial nature of democratic norms. The interplay between populist styles and institutional resilience thus determines whether democratic backsliding, competitive authoritarianism or renewed pluralism prevails in each polity.
