Positive Behavior Support for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities
Summary
Positive Behavior Support (PBS) represents a values-based, multicomponent framework designed to reduce challenging behaviour and enhance quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities. Grounded in behavioural science, PBS integrates functional assessment, proactive environmental design and person-centred planning to identify the antecedents and functions of problematic behaviour. Interventions emphasise teaching alternative skills, modifying contexts to promote success and building capacity among caregivers and support networks. Core to PBS is the ethical commitment to minimise restrictive practices, address individual strengths and preferences, and engage the person and their stakeholders as active partners in developing sustainable support plans. Over the past decade, research has illuminated the mechanisms by which contextual changes, staff training and systematic monitoring converge to achieve durable behaviour change, while economic evaluations have underscored the potential cost-effectiveness of well-implemented PBS models in community and residential settings.
