Summary
Postbiotics are defined as preparations of inactivated microorganisms and/or their components that confer measurable health benefits on the host. Unlike live probiotics, postbiotics comprise microbial cell fragments, metabolites and secreted proteins without viable cells, combining safety advantages with retained bioactivity. Key mechanisms include modulation of intestinal barrier integrity, regulation of mucosal and systemic immune responses, and inhibition of pathogen colonisation. Principal bioactive constituents encompass short-chain fatty acids, extracellular polysaccharides, peptidoglycan fragments, surface layer proteins and secreted peptides. These molecules interact with host pattern recognition receptors to fine-tune inflammatory pathways, enhance epithelial tight junctions and promote microbial homeostasis. Emerging evidence links postbiotics to improvements in functional gastrointestinal disorders, prevention of infectious colitis, attenuation of inflammatory bowel disease activity and support for neonatal gut maturation. Industrial and regulatory interest is rising as standardised definitions and production methods pave the way for novel therapeutic and nutritional applications across human and veterinary medicine.
