Summary

Recent clinical research has demonstrated that specific probiotic strains can exert measurable benefits in adults with established metabolic disease. In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, consumption of two Lactobacillus reuteri strains led to significant reductions in glycated haemoglobin and serum cholesterol over three months, with further decreases in systolic blood pressure after six months. Analysis of faecal microbial profiles revealed that improvements in metabolic parameters correlated with increases in the administered probiotic species and supportive genera such as Bifidobacterium. Moreover, strain-dependent shifts in microbial community structure were associated with distinct clinical outcomes, emphasising the importance of precise probiotic selection. These findings highlight the potential for targeted modulation of gut ecology to deliver sustainable improvements in glycaemic control and cardiovascular risk factors.
