Probiotic Applications in Oral Health Management
Summary
The management of oral health is increasingly influenced by ecological approaches that seek to restore and maintain a balanced microbial community rather than simply eradicate pathogens. Probiotics—live microorganisms that confer health benefits when delivered in sufficient quantities—offer targeted modulation of the oral microbiota, promoting the growth of health-associated species and inhibiting cariogenic or periodontopathogenic organisms. These agents may act by competitive exclusion, production of antimicrobial metabolites or modulation of local immune responses. Clinical and preclinical studies have demonstrated potential benefits in preventing dental caries, reducing gingival inflammation, attenuating halitosis and supporting periodontal therapy. Advances in formulation—ranging from lozenges and chewing gums to toothpastes and mouth rinses—have broadened the practical applications of probiotic interventions. Future directions include the development of strain-specific therapies, personalised regimens based on individual microbial profiles and integration with postbiotic approaches to harness inactivated microbial components or metabolites for added stability and safety.
