In a 2024 study, combinations of Lactobacillaceae isolates and the probiotic yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-3856 were shown to exert multifactorial inhibition of C. albicans in vitro. Selected lactobacilli inhibited planktonic growth, suppressed hyphal development by up to 78 %, and co-aggregated with yeast cells; synergy with S. cerevisiae enhanced aggregation without antagonism between beneficial strains. These findings suggest that defined probiotic consortia may achieve broader anticandidal activity than single strains alone. An earlier investigation demonstrated that vaginal isolates of Lactobacillus crispatus and L. fermentum produce a heat- and protease-resistant compound that inhibits C. albicans proliferation and hyphal induction, even after neutralisation of acidity. In a murine model of vulvovaginal candidiasis, combined supernatants from these species effectively limited fungal colonisation, highlighting the translational potential of probiotic-derived metabolites for in vivo application.
