Professional Identity and Adaptation of Immigrant Teachers

The global mobility of educators has intensified scrutiny of how immigrant teachers reconstruct their professional identity and adapt within new educational environments. Professional identity arises from the interplay of pre-migration training, cultural capital and the expectations of host institutions. Upon arrival, immigrant teachers commonly confront challenges related to language proficiency, the validation of qualifications and unfamiliar curricular and assessment frameworks. Adaptation is shaped by structural factors such as accreditation regimes and induction programmes, alongside interpersonal processes of professional socialization through mentorship, collaborative networks and reflective practice. Successful adaptation fosters self-efficacy, career progression and job satisfaction, while contributing to inclusive pedagogy and richer classroom diversity. Conversely, systemic barriers—bureaucratic hurdles, limited access to ongoing professional development and experiences of marginalisation—can hinder retention and undermine teacher wellbeing. Policy responses that streamline recognition procedures, bolster intercultural training and cultivate supportive school cultures are essential to unlocking the full potential of immigrant educators in increasingly heterogeneous school populations.
