Summary
Proprioception is the sensory mechanism by which the central nervous system receives information about joint movement and position. In the shoulder, a complex arrangement of passive structures (capsule and ligaments) and active stabilisers (rotator cuff and scapular musculature) relies on intact proprioceptive feedback to maintain stability during daily and sporting activities. Joint position sense (JPS) refers to the ability to perceive and reproduce specific shoulder orientations without visual guidance. Impairments in proprioception and JPS are commonly observed following injury, surgery or in degenerative conditions, contributing to pain, functional limitation and increased risk of recurrence. Rehabilitation programmes now increasingly integrate targeted proprioceptive assessment and training—using tools such as digital inclinometers, isokinetic dynamometers and exercise protocols focused on joint position replication and dynamic stabilisation—to restore neuromuscular control, reduce disability and improve long-term outcomes.
